I ordered an overhaul kit from this site and have a question. The pistons have four rings on them. The lower two rings can be put on either way. The 3rd one up from the bottom is a compression ring and appears to have a slight dot on them and will be facing up. The top compression ring is chrome and does not have a dot and I am unsure of which way to put it. They have a very slight chamfer on the the inside, should this be up or down. Also how should I set the rotation of the ring gaps so they are not aligned?

The chamfer should be at the bottom of the ring - otherwise on the compression stroke the compression 'uses' the chamfer as a lever, and allows the ring to move away from the cylinder wall, reducing compression.

I think the chamfer is there to help smear a little oil round the cylinder walls on the down stroke - most of the oil having been removed by the scraper ring.

As James says - rotate the gaps by 180 degrees.

Mark,

Man, I am not sure about up or down on the top ring, is there a set of direction with them? I have always had directions come with them.

About the gaps, my book says "the rings should be arranged so that the gaps of adjacent rings are on the opposite sides of the pistons." I took this to be 180 degrees from each other.

Hope this helps.

James
