The old grey beastie died last fall while brushing, it was getting low on power and then steam all over the place - the back cylinder ( #1 ?) seems to be the culprit the plug is an oily mess and the radiator is pressured so that when it is running water gushes out the overflow. I suspect a burnt valve or blown head gasket, is there anything else that it might be, or any other tests to do before I pull the head and peer into the oily depths.

The back one, nearest the driver is #4, but either way it would look like plenty of oil is dripping down the valve stem - nothing much to worry about, and good for upper cylinder lubrication :)

Pressurised rad is probably head, yes, and not too difficult to do either. Once the head is off, it is a good time to sort out the valves and guides, too.

Of course, if it isn't the head, then suspect the block, but I hope it isn't that as you sound like a man who looks after his tractor. If it is the block, look in the sump for milky oil - a sure sign that water is getting places it should not be.

You could try a compression test on each cylinder - more than a 15 psi difference between all the cylinders could indicate a bigger problem, so get back to the board then.

Just lifting the rocker cover off the head may show rusty deposits - in which case definitely do the head, unless the sump oil is milky - so again get back to the board.

Someone here will help or provide advice.

Although I might suggest just a blown head gasket could also be a cause for coolant in the oil.
At this point you will definitely need a head gasket, cause that head's gotta come off!
If I had to bet I would put money on it being the head gasket and/or the head surface being warped, both easy fixes. As James says, now's the time to deal with it well - and be set for the next 50 years.
