Hi. My Grey Fergie Petrol/TVO TED20 has only been starting on Easy Start recently. I have done various things to try to get it starting properly again including replaced spark plugs, cleaned out the fuel filters and replaced rotten coil. Has anyone got any other suggestions as to what I could do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The simplest way once you are running and the engine is at normal operating temp is to open the throttle hard - a puff of black smoke means you are running rich - hesitation from the engine means you are running weak - if weak undo the bottom knurled knob 1/8 of a turn at time until you are running rich, then back off a little towards weak. You should get an immediate response from the engine when you whack the throttle open.

The slow running (idle) screw at the top RH side of the carb should be undone or done up until the engine is running smoothly at 750rpm - you may need to adjust your throttle stop screw a little. Beware, this screw runs counter intuitive - screwing in makes the mixture richer, screwing out makes it weaker.

If this does not make sense - use the Ferguson manual and follow it carefully. I run my TED slightly rich - for the amount of work I do with it, I'm not too worried about fuel consumption.

Sorry - the bottom (mixture) jet should be initially unscrewed 2 1/2 turns from closed - this should give you a point to start from and adjust richer/weaker from there.

Yes, replace condenser, plug leads, and check that the 'hidden' filters in the fuel tank (you will need to drain the tank and remove the fuel tap assembly) are clean. Assuming you have the Standard engine, there is no extra filter in the carb elbow on the Zenith 24T2 carb. At least, not that I've ever found (someone correct me if I'm missing something please).

Also check your carburation is set right, and that your choke is actually doing something to the carb (they sometimes shake loose/off).

Personally I hate Easy Start - especially on diesels - but a petrol engine should never need it - I would suspect fuel or spark problems.
