i have a to30 that i am about to do a brake job on. a friend of mine who also owns a 30 said the axle seals in these trators were prone to leak and my brake job wouldn't last long as the new seals i was going to install when i did the brakes would start leaking fairly quickly and soak my shoes in the process. he said there was an aftermarket seal kit to fix this problem but didn't know where to get it. has anyone had these problems, or is he imagining things. how do the axles come out when i get ready to change the seals. thanks in advance.

If you want to go original, instead of the sure seals, you can pull the axle (it just slides right out) and take it to your local tractor man who can cut the old seal off and replace it by pressing a new one on for you, maybe $30 or so per axle, plus price of seal. Actually there are two seals on each axle, and the inner one is easy and you can do that yourself. It's the outer one that is pressed on the axle. You do have shims on each axle, and you should save them and note how many on each side. When you put the axles back in, with both wheels off the ground turn one forward and the other should turn backward. If it turns forward also, you have the axles too tight, not enough shim. As for dealing with heavy rear wheels, just don't let it fall. To put it back on, i use a piece of vinyl under it so it will slip just enough to get the studs to line up. I've replaced many loaded rear wheels and tires by myself and i'm a little guy (165#).

what your friend says is correct ,the brake job is not hard if you have the following ,a manual for the tractor ,shims to replace the ones which will be no good when you pull each axel ,sure seals --thats what the seals are called to stop the oil from contacting the brake shoes and new brake shoes ,then its just a matter of following the manual ,remember if you have fluid in your tires dont try this alone ,i learned the hard way
good luck Danny
