Oil change TO20

I drained the oil for the first time on my TO20. I then removed the plate and filter. When I cleaned the screen and installed it and the filter back in place, I installed a new o-ring on the plate. When I tightened it on, it seemed to seat just fine. When I filled it and ran it for a couple of minutes, it started to drip. Is there a trick to tightening or installing the o-ring? I drained the oil again and re-tightened. Same leak. Is this common?

when you get a chance take a good look at the oil pan see if it was bent over the years,if it was you will have a tough job getting it to stop leaking,i did everything to my te20,as mine was bent badly ,finally i bought a new cast iron pan and put it on and that fixed my leak finally ,the pan costs around $95 and weigh 44 pounds so you need a bit of help to line it up to get the bolts started,not a bad job though and if you do go this route dont over tighten the gasket as they tend to come out of the cover if you do good luck

I had a similar problem with my TO20, I banged up the pan, and after getting that straightened out, used some silicon on the new gasket. I over tightend it and the gasket popped out - frustrating. After getting the gasket back in place it is OK. TF

I wouldn't say it is real common for the filter plate to leak but sometimes they do. I have been changing oil in my TO 20 for 35 years and every once in a while it will leak, new gasket or not. Yes a little RTV silicone should fix you up and maybe the next time it won't leak with out silicone.

Put the silicon on both sids of the gasket or on the plate itself? Do I let it 'skin' first then assemble or right away? Thanks.

It should not leak a drop. The plate may be warped some, try a little silicone.
