I have a Massey Fegusion model #35 with a Perkins diesel. I had the injectors repaired and noticed that due to a bad spray pattern that the pre-combustion chambers were badly worn. The ITT manual states that these can cause a loss of power and smoking. The pre-combustion chambers are about $30.00 a piece as well a job to replace. Has anyone replaced these and is it worth the $100 plus dollars to replace them. The engine has a lot of hours and a major rebuild is out of the question for a few years. Will the replacement help the small amount of smoking that is present? There seems to be no loss of power at the present time.

Larru, Since you are not experancing a loss of power and only light smoking, A compression and leak down test would confirm the worthyness of your bottom end. Your pre-cups would have to be really badly worn or cracked to make that big of a differiance. Most of the time if you do have to replace them they will have to be machine fitted and resurfaced so yes it is worth the 100 bux to do it.....I would run comp. and leak down test and confirm a good ring seal before I decided what to do about the head, it if the bottom end checks ok I'd do the pre-cups and reseal the valves if I had marginal test results I'd skip the pre-cups and save for a rebuild.

best wishes

If its working ok I'd be inclined to leave it alone and plan for a full rebuild in the future. However, you could also take the approach that if you were to get the whole cylinder head reconditioned now, you won't need to do it when you get round to doing the rest of the engine.

If head is off you just need to decide whether you want to spend some money now or spend it all later. If you have to take head off to do it, I would leave it alone unless you particularly want to spread the cost out in which case doing the head first is the way to go. I guess its a cash flow based decision rather than a mechanical one.
