I've just been rebuilding TED20. Has got MH baler engine instead of original.Hadn't run for 20 yrs.Changed magneto disributor cos caps all cracked and couldn't find replacements. Have put on distributor from old car that fits. new points, condenser, cap and leads. new plugs. 12v coil instead of 6v. I've just rebuilt carb inc new float valve and throttle spindle (zen 24t2). Cleaned air filter and replaced rubber hoses.
It starts fine and idles reasonably well, but as soon as you open the throttle it misfires and splutters. To get it to run at all i've got the timing set about 20 degrees advanced.Theres plenty of fuel goin to carb.I'm fast running out of ideas, can anyone please help!!!Could the coil be faulty as it is quite an old one? cheers in anticipation of a brainwave!!

It could be that your old distributor has springs and weights that are really far off what you need for your tractor, causing the timing to be off once you rev it up. Jim
PS Or maybe you have a mouse nest in your intake manifold.

Check the distributor shaft bushings and the shaft itself.

Could be coil or condenser - or even an air leak - check where the carb bolts onto the manifold, and also for air leaks on the throttle spindle - both are favourite places for air to get in and make the mixture too weak for nice running.

Just some thoughts.
