I am considering going back to 6V - my question is this.

If I keep my existing 12V battery, and let it discharge to less than 6V, can I then connect it to the 6V system, which will only charge to 6V?

I do not want to spend 80GBP on a 6V battery - which was why I changed over to 12V in the first place . . . . . . .

As I understand it, each of the 8 cells in the 12V battery is 'worth' 1.5V but can I run a 12V battery as a 'dummy' 6V????

Anyone got any ideas?

James, Your battery doesn't work that way,. When you charge it you don't put volts in it, you add amps at a given voltage. If you use the water analogy, the battery is like a pressurized tank. Instead of pressure, though we have voltage. The water in the tank is like the amps. When we charge the battery it is analogous to filling up the tank with water while holding the tank pressure constant. When we discharge the battery, we take amps out of it, like draining the tank. The number of cells and the plate materials determine the voltage. Hope this helps.

Why are you going to pay �80 for a 6V battery? I recently bought one for my Austin 10, it was about �40 from local A1 MS branch. I can't remember the number but it's the one that they used to fit to Triumphs. I'm sure it would fit a fergy.

The �80 was from a local supplier to me who trades in all sorts of 'stuff' - based on your discovery I might try some more similar outfits to your A1 MS round here, but have so far not found any better prices . . . Thanks for the info.

Yes it is a chemical thing and no you do not want it to remain discharged. Lead acid batteries need to be up to their design specific gravity or they will die.

I am sure this will not work. If you had one of those batteries with the exposed lead connectors between the (6, not 8) cells, you could perhaps tap in to the centre one and use half the battery.
Here where it gets cold we are always warned to keep our batteries charged, as if they are discharged they can freeze. Clearly something dramatic is happening in the chemistry. Maybe a chemist could chime in here???
Why the flip flop? If you switched to 12, now are thinking of switching to 6, what's to say you won't think of switching to 12 again later?
Maybe you could take 80 pounds and buy a nice Fergie implement instead - then you'd have a more tangible benefit. Thinking aloud here...

Thanks Jim - I had a feeling if it was that good an idea then someone would already have done it!!

There was something in the back of my head that said it couldn't be done - but then "It can't be done" is a red rag to a bull . . . .

Why the flip flop? simple, I keep looking at the alternator and thinking what un ugly lump it is on such nice cleanly designed lines.

12 volt generator would solve that part - I am thinking about putting one from a car on mine if it will mount decently.
