Hello folks, I have a TO-20, just finishing rebuilding the engine. Should be firing it up this weekend... I hope. I installed a coolant temp. guage while I was at it. Since this is not "original equipment" my manual has no info on operating temp. What should I expect for normal operating temp. under normal load, and heavy brush hogging? Is there a "don't go above" temperature?
thanks

Awesome. Thanks for the help. Didn't get my TO running last weekend, had to fix my truck instead. Hopefully I'll fire-up my TO by this weekend.

gshadle, all most all gas or diesel engine operate thier best at between 170 and 200 degrees, diesels are just a tad on the lower scale, thats where it is most efficent at burning fuel and lubricating parts, 180 is almost always the normal opperating temp (it can depend on where your temp sender is located + or - 10 degrees) I dont' worry unless my tractor reaches 205 or 215 as long as it does not keep rising. But with the proper coolant mixture, clean raditor and make sure the raiditor fins are straight and not blocked it should not rise above 210 with a heavy load, another quick check is to check you raditior temp at the top , middle and bottom there should be aleast a 25 degree difference, if not you need to starting checking to see why....Remember your tractor is pretty old and subject to cracking blocks and heads....so try to stay under 210-205 scale and you will be ok...make sure you set your timing and adjust your fuel mixture, and have a clean air filter...

hope this helps you, if you have any more questions post back...
best wishes
