I posted an earlier message about finding about 1 quart of diesel fuel in the crankcase after the engine started knocking. I drained the crankcase and added fresh oil after replacing the lift pump or priming pump which I believed was the source of the fuel in the crankcase.

It is the opinion of everyone that I have talked to that no more fuel than that should not have caused the knock. With hay season here, I'm concerned that I haven't found the problem.

I just bought the tractor from a neighbor who bougt it new in '88. It has 1550 hours on it. After buying it I took it to the local John Deere dealer (no MF dealer nearby) and had him do a complete service on the tractor.

Any ideas on what might cause the knocking? It has not happened since I changed the oil but I've only run it for an hour or so. I did have a problem with an injector sticking open causing the engine to smoke, knock and rev up. The only way to slow it was with the fuel shutoff valve. I had the injectors cleaned/ polished at a diesel specialist and it has run fine since. I can't make any connection between the two problems other than the knock.
