Help! I own two tef 20 diesel tractors, and they both seem to suffer the same problem. They have both been sitting in a barn for 20 years gathering dust, and have not been used. They have had the diesel system flushed with clean fuel. They have been turned over on the starter and diesel has been emitted from the bleed screws on the injector pump. However, once the injector pipes are cracked open, there is no sign of any diesel. What could be wrong? I have removed the inspection cover off the sid eof the pump, and noticed that the tappets do not seem to be touching the bottom of the springs. Is this normal? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

yes, allthough only one tappet at a time!.
If when you crank the engine the tappets go up and down, good.
Next remove a delivery valve, and place it(and the spring and rose) in a little diesel in a jar. When the the engine is turned by hand, diesel should come out of the top of the pump, and may continue after cranking.
If it does turn the engine until the fuel stops. Repeat for each delivery valve/cylinder.
if you get no fuel, iether no supply to the pump, or the tractor has been stored with no diesel in the pump, and the plunger and element are rusted together, within the pump.
This when the engine is cranked would force the plunger upwards, the spring would not be able to return the plunger, thus explaining the clearance between tappets and camshaft. I have in the past used a pin punch down through the delivery valve area to free up the plunger (only if you're sure and reckon that its that or a repair shop). Replace the delivery valve/s
If this is enough to get the engine running( on all cyls), your lucky. Make no judgements about the engine, until youve worked the machine for a day. IF NONE OF THE ABOVE MAKES SENSE, send the pump in for test and repair to a diesel workshop.

I would just like to say thanks to Nich (uk) for your suggestions with regards to the fergy pump. I have used a punch to tap the plungers down, and one of the pumps now works fine. However the other pump still has stuck plungers, so i think I may have to take it to a pump specialist. I am very pleased with being able to get on and try and get the tractors started now that i know what is wrong with them. Thanks again, Richard.
