TO-20 Rear wheels and Tires

When I bought my TO-20 it had 12.4 x 28 tires on the rear. These were mounted on 10" wide rims. I am planning on setting it up with a set of dual rear wheel adapters. I have a couple of rims, one 10" and one 11" wide. I had origninally planned to put 12.4 x 28 tires on a set of 10" rears to use as the second wheel on each side. Now, checking around, I find most 12.4 tires are on 11" rims, and the tires on 10" rims are smaller in width. In either case I'm going to need one more rim to make a matched set. What should I do? What is the "common" practice? Thanks.

I really don't think that 1 inch on the rim will make a difference. When my father bought the 1952 8N in 1955, the back tires were whipped. The originals were 10x28 (now 11.2x28). Part of the deal was new tires. The dealer didn't have 10x28 so he put on 11x28 (now 12.4x28) It seemed to have a lot more pull with those tires.

Why would you want to put dual rear wheels on an TO20? There is not enough weight to hold the front end down with single wheels when they get a hold. Anything the 3 point will pick up single will handle. Also would be more apt to bust something inside with them dually. Back to your question, bigger is better.

have had duels for my to-20 from new on makes it twice the tractor in sand and soft ground and also looks cool plus we use it in the marsh and it will just about flot

Yea, I can see your point on ground like that. But for use around here like bush hogging, pulling out stumps and just moving stuff they would be a real pain. They would work well in the snow.

First, duals because I am planning to work around the edge of a pond to plant millet for ducks. I've got a Towner 2120 offset disc harrow which will reach into the wet grond without my sinking the tractor, but extra traction and flotation would reduce the likelihood of my winding up with a Ferguson TO-20 pond ornament.

Second, that still doesn't answer the question about what size tire on what size rim. To have the second set match the first I would want 12.4s on a 10" rim, but it seems many folks put 12.4s on an 11" rim, but..mine came with new 12.4s on 10" rims. It may not matter all that much, but I'd like to find that out by asking rather than expensive experiment.

I asked when I replaced tires on my TE 20 and the 12.4 had a prefered rim of 11" with 10" being acceptable. the 11.2 had a prefered rim on 10" with acceptable being 9" or 9.5". Dealer reccomended 12.4 on 10 as it protects rim when working in wooded areas and tire stays on rim better. About mounting duals - It may be a good idea to check the width that the dual adaptor gains from the first hub to the second to be sure you have enough width for two 12.4s. My tractor dealer often makes the outer tire one size smaller or a more worn tire to allow the tractor to only run on the inner tire on hard / gravel surface to cut down on tire scrubing.
