What can go wrong with a Ferguson TED

What are the most likely things that can go wrong with a Ferguson TED?

Example: Over heating, bearing failure caused by low oil pressure, PTO failure.

I'd be interested to know. I've just bought a TED and it appears that the PTO shaft has failed.

Hydraulics must be well maintained. Drain out a bit of the hydraulic oil periodically, as water sinks to the bottom and can freeze causing cracked pumps if you live where it's cold. (Water gets in due to condensation on the metal surfaces with temperature changes.)
Rear axles on the earlier ones could break under extreme conditions.
Timing chains stretch over the years and can skip a tooth.
Weights on the governor can come off and break the timing chain.
Sounds bad, actually these are good reliable tractors though.

Like Jim W says, look after the hydraulics - you guys over there suffer from cold weather more than we do, so water is more of a problem. Anything else is down to preventive maintenance.

Overheating - not a problem with good preventive maintenance.

Cracked blocks - not a problem with good preventive maintenance.

Oil pressure/bearings etc. - not a problem with good preventive maintenance/oil changes etc.

Most stuff - not a problem with good preventive maintenance.

They are brilliant little tractors, if they are looked after properly (like any machine, really) and will still outperform much of the new stuff - even at 50+ years old - which is why they have such a good following, even now.

Abuse your machine, and expect to pay for doing so.

(Not that I'm in any way biased towards Fergies, of course) Grin.
