Problems with PTO

Hi All,

I've been using my Ferguson TED for the last two days (about 1.5 hours / day) to cut down my felt. I'm using the side slashed (not the one at the back). Everything went very well up to now. But then all of a sudden the PTO shaft will not turn. The lift is working okay.

Is there any reason why the PTO shaft will stop working? And if there is, can I fix it myself ?

Sounds like the shaft broke betwwen the pump and the rear of tractor.

Is this a difficult problem to fix?

I'll check tonight. Although I noticed that when I engage the PTO the implements shaft tries to turn. I asked the local repair shop and they said that it is the groves on the PTO shaft that links the PTO shaft and implement. These groves are worn down, so the implement shaft will slip.

CAN YOU DAMAGE THE PTO IF IT IS ENGAGED WHEN THE TRACTOR IS REVERSED?

Remove implement shaft and see if pto seems to be turning normally.
Very easy to replace. Park on steep downhill slope, or else drain oil (note common pool of oil for hydraulics, differential, and transmission ~ 5 imperial gallons). If using the parking-on-a-slope method, wait a while for oil to move forward.
Undo 4 bolts around pto at rear. Pull out shaft; it will come out including its bearing and seal.
No problem driving backwards with pto engaged.
