TO-20 intake valves...part 2

This is part 2 of my previous post on the valves for my TO-20. I appreciate the help I have gotten so far, but need more enlightenmant. These stem guards on the intake valves.... what is there purpose, why on the intake only, & do I need them? There where none when I disassembled the head. No neoprene gaskets either. I have a valve rebuild kit coming, but stem guards where not in the discription of parts.

On the positive side, I got a little sand blaster last week... Already cleaned-up the valve cover, fan blade, oil pan, and few other pieces real nice. The hood is next.

Valve guide seals on the intake minimize "sucking" oil into the compression chamber. Without them you may get an occasional puff of smoke on decel. depending on how close the tolerances are. I have used an "umbrella" type seal on some engines with sucess. A good machine shop can match up o rings or seals. My vote is use something. Good luck, have fun!!!
