Te20 lucas starter

here is a usefull piece of information for people who have a Lucas starter on the ole Fergusons ,the condition will be that the starter will spin fine but the pinion gear wont go forward on the spiral gear to engage the fly wheel.This problem is caused by the failure of a rubber type bushing that was built into the starter in the old days and by now has deteriorated, I found a source for this part of the drive assembly and for those of us who dont have $300 to spend on a replacement starter,its a nice option.

Hi again. I looked on my starter yesterday but I diddn't found the rubber type. I also removed the pinion gear. It looked like the starter had been opened before. Can you describe where the rubber type bushing should be and how it looks like. Is it just a circle ?

Harold the rubber bushing i speak of is enclosed in a metal cylinder about 1.5 inches long and has teeth or dogs that grab the other surface as it turns it is the part that come off when you remove the brass type retainer nut withe the reversed thread ,hope this makes sence

I have opened my lucas starter #25519F but I didn't found the rubber bushing. I have also removed the metal cylinder, I think it's called bendix, but didn't find it. Should I remove something more ?
I wonder what does the rubber bushing do. How does it influence the bendix to engage the fly wheel?

The teeth on my bendix, 9 theeths, is not so very good. Maybe thats the reason ? I have checked the teeth on the fly wheel and they are ok.

TANKS !!!, I really hope this will fix my problemt. I'm from Norway and have a TEA-20 1951 with 6V. The pinion gear wont go forward on the spiral gear to engage the fly wheel, as you described. I have spoken to many people about the problem but nobody could give me the answer. I will open up the starter this evening and check it out. I really hope I can buy the new part somewhere nearby. sorry about the delay ,i was away out of the country.the lucas starter i have did the same thing ,it would spin but would notpush the pinion out to engage the flywheel ,i bought the part i mentioned from the company i named and that fixed my problem,it is not the easiest starter to take apart make sure you lay out the parts as you take them off and put back in reverse order,there is a spring clip in there ,dont damage it there si a retainer nut which is a reverse thread and it may be held in place with a tap from a chisel,so take your time ,if i could do it you can too.PS dont worry about your english i understood you fine but im from Ireland and dont speak too good either good luck
