Just got my first Ferguson!!!...

Howdy All!! I'm new here, but I got a funny feeling I'll be back!

Long story short, we just bought an acreage/farm (29 acres) West of Lincoln, NE. This last Saturday was my best friend's grandparent's farm auction, and I ended up getting their Ferguson 35 (with 3-point hitch), bush-hog, slip-scraper, 3-point rear blade, two-row bottom plow, a four-section rotary hoe and a set of snow chains for it!! Problem was, no one (grandpa can't even remember) what year it is! The only thing resembling a VIN I could find was a number on the data plate near the gauges; SGM I77425. Can anyone help me I.D. the year?!? I don't have the manuals yet (I'll get them later this week when I get the stuff home)and I'd just like to know the year!! It's been maintained by one of my buddy's uncles over the years and it's in really good shape (as are all the impliments!) can't wait to get it out to the farm!!

Congrats on the Fergie as well as the land. It is great to own land, smell the fresh turned soil, plant a seed and reap a harvest! I too am a newbie at it and love coming home from the office and fireing up my Fergie and wondering through our farm.
Most of all, have fun with it.

Dana, congratulations on your equipment. You will really enjoy it. If you have a question(s) feel free to ask. Some of the crabbier people on these forums get bent out of shape if they read a question that's been asked before. Ignore those, and the rest of us will gladly help if we can. Don't be afraid to ask a "dumb" question. If we were all Mensa members we wouldn't be fooling with this wonderful old iron anyhoo. Have fun! Cosmo

Hey Dana, I live south of Lincoln near Firth .. You'll have to let me know how that rotary hoe works out. I have a small garden and would like to break down the dirt a little more then I can with a 2 bottom plow. Don't know if I need a rotary hoe or disc. It will be a while before I can buy something. I too was at an auction this weekend and got a 1967 IHC 1600 loadstar dump/grain truck, wife's to the point she just smiles. I'm sure you'll like your Ferguson and be amazed how hard it will work. Heck Steve, if you're that close, you're more than welcome to borrow that rotary hoe anytime! Maybe you can even teach me some things about this tractor! We're moving this weekend to Milford (the BIG moving day!) so we'll be out there after this weekend, no phone yet, but I'd be happy to get with you sometime! Send me an e-mail!

Dana, welcome to the board. Many helpful people here. Your places sounds wonderful. Also sounds like you got a nice package.

You found the serial number alright...

The SGM corresponds to the tractor features...
S= Standard Chassis i.e. 4 wheel, low clearance.
G= Gasoline Engine, and M= Dual Clutch. Your clutch has two positions halfway down will disengage the transmission and all the was will disengage the PTO.

The other half of the serial number 177425 is cross referenced to the 1957 production year.

Take some time and search the archives and articles lots of good info. Get yourself a set of manuals, Usually the owners manual, maitanence manual and a parts book. The best prices for manuals is an MF dealer. However, be aware try to find a full line dealership close by. The smaller lawn mower and small line dealers are charged a premium on parts out side of their lines.

Example I could get all three of these manuals for $40 from full line, small line MF dealer $80 and on the web over $100.

Most think the I&T manuals are not that valuable.

WOW!! Thanks Jeff! I do have all the manuals (Mark's grandpa has them all in a notebook. Put them there when he got the tractor years ago, and they're all in pristine shape!! ...but they're not here yet!!)

Thanks again for the info and advice (never even dawned on me to search the archives for info!)
