I have recently overhauled the engine on my 1951 Fergie TO-30. The water-temp sensor bulb is located in a tapped hole in the flanged outlet at the cylinder head. The water temp hand doesn't register, no matter how long I run the tractor. Also, the oil pressure is not nearly as good as I thought it would be; it is approx. 30 psi -- I thought it would be 60 to 70 with new bearings, etc.

Could I have faulty guages? Or maybe the wrong radiator cap (in the case of temp) or something else I should look for? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Jerry, Mr. Chapp, Ray and Toolman, I really appreciate your input. I feel more comfortable with the oil pressure after your messages. I do need to get with the water temp, though. Can you offer any further advice on:

What kind of thermostat should I be using? Possibly name brand and temperature range? Also, the type of radiator cap I should get?

Do any of you have a good source for a water temp gauge? I only have the Stevens Catalog and a couple of others for aftermarket items. It would be nice to find an original but that may be hard to do.

Again, I really appreciate your input. You have taken a lot of the unease away. Thanks much.

My Manual says that the oil pressure should be between 20 and 30 psi at 2200 rpm and 15 psi at idle. Your 30 psi is just where it should be.

Regarding your temperature guage, it is a capillary tube filled with, I believe, alchohol. The fluid heats up and expands, exerting pressure on a Bourdon tube in the guage that is calibrated versus temperature. If the line breaks it looses fluid and the guage will not work. That's probably what happened to yours if it's not reading. They either work or thy don't. You'll probably need a new one.

I think 30psi is not at all bad, However I feel like you either have a bad temp unit or something really wrong in the thermostat area, Hope this helps... If she maintains 30 psi I'd be pleased...

Like Mr. chapp said, the water temp gauge is likely frozen. A new gauge should solve your water temp problem. The oil pump relief valve is set to 35psi, so 30psi is very good oil pressure.

don,t post much but read every post and have learned from each and every one something, no dumb questions , if somebody asks then he needs help and a decent responce to ones best ability is called for, one of the best sites around for fergie owners , lets try and keep it that way.
