TEA rear axle end float

When putting together the rear end and installing the axles, the books tell you to shim until the two axles touch, as evidenced by one turning in the same direction as the other when you turn one of them. Then, you are supposed to shim out by 0.008" to 0.010".
But since the pre-load (or lack of it) on the bearing is set by the shrunk-on collar in the hub, what difference does it make how far apart they are in the middle of the differential? What would be wrong with 0.020", for example?

jim i thought the same thing about the collar but it doesnt set preload the collar bottoms against a edge right there . the end play is set by the axle touching spider gear pinion and when you draw down bearing on axle it pulls the outer wheel baering race in to bearing.i guess you could say your just setting the outer bearing distance not actually the axle preload. when i reassembled mine i just put silicone around axle trumpet housing and this made the axle to tight so i had to remove them and i made a to 20 gasket work which is .010 thick.the axle sims are still available same as to 20.

Capt Kirk-
Regarding the 0.010" trumpet gaskets - they set the float for the differential. I found out about that in time so do have those installed, and the diff seemed to turn without drag. Beyond that it was impossible to tell how accurate it was since the pinion was already installed, and there was no place I could reach in and try to wiggle it around. (I couldn't get the trumpet gaskets for for mine so had to make them out of brass shim stock). But I'm talking about the shims at the outer end, between the brake backing plate and the hub. I installed one side and buttoned it up, thinking then I would set the float at the other side. So I put in some shims and tried using a dial indicator on the hub which is when I realized it wasn't moving in or out regardless of the shim thickness.
I think these two things are unrelated, but maybe there is something I don't understand about your explanation?

jim your right about trumpet gasket on the pinion and ring gear i had to use them so i could even turn my pinion. i installed 1 axle and tried to set the end float and it seemed excessive so i took out some shims and it didnt help then i installed the other side and it had no play even with original shims in place so i had to go back to other side and reinstal original shims to get at least measurable movement but it was very frustrating.
