My TO-20 fouls the plugs within an hour of operation, so bad that I lose nearly all power. I have to stop and clean them, then they're fine for another hour. Compression is fine and even - 105-110 in all cylinders. I've tried different heat ranges, but still the same problem. Any suggestions? I have the tractor broken to replace the clutch, so now is the time to tackle any major work.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions. We're going to run a few more tests - including the additional compression tests - and repair or replace whatever is necessary. I appreciate all your help.

Rick, are you seeing any signs of smoke at idle? If so, it could be the valve stem seals or the valve guides being worn. You'll see it at idle because the vacuum is high at idle and that will pull oil down the valve stems if the seals and/or guides are bad. If you have a lot of hours on your head then you might need a valve guide replacement and/or new seals. As mr. chapp says you might have poorly seated or stuck oil control rings. Sounds like you hot compression numbers are pretty good. A additive like Rislone in the oil or Marvel Mystery Oil squirted copiously in the cylinders and then allowed to sit for a few days might help.A little more history on your tractor might help this forum give you some better advice.

Oil fouled, for sure... now I'm thinking (finally). The valve stems are letting oil go by, aren't they? That could happen, I think, and still have great compression. If so, can that be fixed short of a full-blown valve job?

Bad oil rings will also allow good, if not great compression. Best way to check is a wet / dry compression test.

Hi Rick, Gas fouled or oil fouled? Gas foul will usually be wet & smell of fuel. Oil fouled will usually be black, oily and crusty.

You might try a different make of spark plug. I had the plug fouling problem on my tractors and finally started mixing Sta-Bil in with the gasoline. That seemed to help. I had a TO-30,Farmall M and a 300. Sold out and retired.
