TO35 Type of Trans oil

I just bought a Ferguson TO35 and want to change the Trans/Diff/hydraulic oil because the stuff in it is all milky pink. I think they may have put autotrans fluid in it.
The problem is there are so many conflicting views on the type of oil to use. Would it be safe to use a GL5 based 80W90 oil. I have a 5 gal pail that I Bought at WalMart. I live in the northern part of the country where the temperature shift between summer and winter is exteme. Summer gets to 90 above, winter down to -40.

Any help to clarify this is apprectiated.

In my 35 I use GL1, 80w90 oil. It's called Dentax, and is made by Shell oil.

The general concensus does not recommend the use of GL5 trans-hydro fluid. Concern over bearing corrosion.

The recommended fluid is straight 90 weight GL-1 mineral oil. (also available at Wal-mart in 5 gal pails) This is the summer oil. THe winter oil is 80 weight GL1.

I have been useing the above since I bought my (1959)TO-35 in 1989 from a nearby farmer who bought it new. This tractor has never been worked on, so I would say mineral oil is what you want to use. How do you tell the operational difference between the two oils? I personally doubt one can tell unless 2 tractors were side by side and an operational comparison was made in the winter.

My local jobbers and Wallyworld stock 90 but not 80. Guess you could special order....special order from wm? Naw..... ..... ....

I think most just run the same 90 wt GL1 mineral oil all year. It was just stated that it can get very cold. If that is the case the poster may have to change out the oil if it gets too thick.

In consistently -O temperatures many guys use 50W mineral oil to improve hyd response. It's very important to remember to change back to 90W when the temperature rises to above O* or excessive wear may demand an overhaul($$$$$).
