Ring gear welded to flywheel

I broke my 49 TO-20 to replace the burned-out clutch and discovered that a previous owner had welded the ring gear to the flywheel in 7 or 8 spots. Will that throw the flywheel off balance enough to cause other problems? Should I replace both now, while the tractor is apart, or keep using the welded parts?

On the earlier TO models, the ring gear was mounted to the flywheel from the rear. After some use, the starter would knock the ring gear off the flywheel. Ferguson made a replacement flywheel (Part No. Z-120C-4020)that mounted the ring gear from the front of the flywheel and had a machined lip on the back edge to prevent the ring gear from coming off. Many people repaired the old design by tack welding the ring gear to the flywheel. You had to be a knowlegeble welder to do it right. I had one on my TO-30. It eventually broke the welds and I replaced it with the revised part.

See if it'll fit on a tire balance machine. Preferably one of those old bubble balance types. Some old gas stations still have them. It'll be accurate enough for your purposes. Then weld a spot or two here and there to balance it.

These old engines weren't balanced or spec'd out like some are today.

Hello:I balance engines for a living ( Auto. racing engines) Unless the flywheel is "Way Off" in weight you would be wasting your time in checking the balance of these "tack welds" What plays into force here is the Low RPM of our great Continetal engines, (About 2,100 Rpm's). I would not belive this would even be detected by a wheel balancer. I get more out of balance shaking from my GearBox than my Engine on my TO-35.
