Yes mine was fairly loose and they should not have too much slack at all since there is no tensioner. Fortunately I got a spare in a batch of NOS parts I bought from someone.
I was told they are the same as on a Triumph TR3, but the TR3 has a tensioner to take up the slack, so I'm not certain.
I would suggest calling The Roadster Factory and asking them how many links the chain is that they sell for the Triumphs. If it's the same number as yours you're in business. They sell two qualities; you can make your own decision about that.
Hope it helps,
Jim

jim i was able to find new chain and gears through sparex but im also rebuilding govener while apart. im hoping the end is in sight 4 this project.i also replaced axle bushing and pin while i had it all apart 2 paint then i noticed the front rims werent correct and bought new ones and also new rears. iwent with a 12.4-28 rear tire.im hoping these arent too large someone already stuffed 13.6 on before i got it.thanx again jim for your usual prompt response.
