TO 20 missing

My TO 20, which I have owned for a year, developed a miss/ backfire last week. By pulling plug wires have found it is coming from cylinder #1. Performed a compresion test and found all cylinders between 105-115#. Replaced the plugs, points, condenser and distributor cap with new parts from NAPA. Still had the miss and now have an occasional backfire thru the carburator. Removing the plug wire makes no difference in performance- in fact may run a little better without cylinder #1. Swapped plug wires around and found no difference- still missing on cylinder #1. Am at my wits end- coil problem? valve train? Any suggestions appreciated.

Doubt if you have a chipped valve. Compresssion looks to good.Check your timing and check the spark on the #1 plug and the #2 plug. If it OK on #2 and not on #1, it could be a bad wire.Make sure it's a big fat blue spark. If it aint, check the radial play in your distributor shaft. I had a similar problem and with the points closed, if I pushed radially on the distributor shaft, the points opened to 0.030"! The distributor was plum wore out. It only lasted 50 years! Had it rebuilt (new shaft and bushing) for $100 and it runs like a top.

Thanks Jerry and all for the suggestions. I did try switching plug wires around and found no difference. Just to check went and bought new plug wires today and put on. No difference. Do not think is valve related/ sticking valve, etc. as I would think the compression would drop due to valve leakage. Would seem to me that the plug is firing either before exhaust or intake valves are fully closed.

Tried pressing on the distributor shaft with cap and rotor/ shield off- does not seem to have excessive play. Did you have to remove your distributor to check out?????

I`d check the intake valve in #1 Either its not closing all the way or it might have a chip out of it allowing it to come back through the carb. RT.

Maybe the intake manifold gasket is leaking by #1 cyl. or check the valve lift on #1 cylinder. I did have a defective new plug once but the chances of a defective old plug and defective new plug in the same cylinder are quite slim. Good luck.
