TO 20 hard to start when cold

I have a TO-20 that is hard to start when it is cold or has sat for more than a few days. It fires right up with a shot of ether. I hate to use the ether. does anybody have any ideas???

can you check the compression in your engine? Low compression may cause the problem you are having with cold starts. Do you get a lot of blue smoke when you tractor starts? Burning off oil might indicate low compression and results in fouled plugs which might contribute to hard starting when cold.

The engine was just rerung last year although I haven't checked the compression. Any Ideas as to how much compression is good? It smokes very little on start up. jeff

Yeah
I have been told that 100 psi is real good compression. I have checked mine before at cranking speed, I got around 90 psi, one of my cylinders is only 75 psi. My TO-20 runs real good but smokes a lot when I first start it.
If your compression is OK, you may also want to check your carb. It may be running lean, or the choke not closing right when you try to start.

The only problem with ether as far as I know is that it removes all lubrication from the cylinder walls causing premature wear. Some folks swear by using WD40 in an aeresol can suggesting that it ignites and isn't as 'dry'
