TO20 or To30

A friend of mine has either a TO20 or TO30 and I could use some advice in identifying it. Unfortunately it's a 5-hour drive away but I took several notes. The ID plate behind the steering wheeel says "TO 73591". On the lower left side of the engine it has a number of "Z120A600" with the letters "PP" under that.
From what I've read in the archives by that engine which is a continental Z120 it should be a TO20 but the archives indicate that high of a serial number should be a TO30. I suppose somewhere along the way an engine from a TO20 was put in a TO30. Or do I have this all wrong.
Unfortunately I looked it over in detail before researching on this webside so I don't know where the oil filter is but I plan on calling and
asking. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Check that serial number above the stearing wheel again. Those things can be hard to read, especially if they were painted-over and scraped down. If that serial number is right, it sounds like you do have a TO20 engine in a TO30 tractor. My tractor had no name plates on it when I got it, I had to do like you and look up the serial number and engine number.
What would you call a TO30 with a TO20 engine? A TO25?

I just purchased a t020 tractor. This is my first tractor,I recently relocated from N.Y.C.to the country I would like some guidance on the following:
a. how often should I change the oil?
b. am I correct that to change the oil filter, I need to remove the first bolt from the front underneath the tractor?
c. What grade of oil should I use? I am in Virginia. Thanks

Steve;

Several noticable differences between TO20 and TO30. The 20 had a one piece gearshift with small knob at top, the 30 had a larger screw-on knob. Ignition switch on 20 is located close to hood release, the 30 has ignition switch just under steering wheel on left side of console.

There are other cosmetic differences, but these are easiest to notice. We had both these tractors on our farm where I grew up.

The oil filter on a z120 cont is in a sump under
the oil pan. The TO 20 has a Zl20 ci and the TO 30
has a Z129. It is true that your s/n is misleading
but check this. The side plates(rear of hood) on a
30 will say "Ferguson 30" and on a 20 they will just say Ferguson.Rear axle and hsg slightly heav-
ier on a TO30. Right and Left Hsg on 30 has p/n
181395M91 and 181397M91. TO20 is 181394M91 and 181396M91.Diff.ring gear and pinion and some trans
parts diff-also a couple parts on hyd pump but no
way to tell if not apart.Rear diff hsg on TO30 is
p/n l8l399M91 and on 20 it is 181398M91.There are many other diff here and there but diff to explain

Steve, please look closley again at the serial#. There is a pretty sure-fire way to tell if the engine is Continental120...no externak oil filter. My 1950 TO has a continental, as did all TO...the O astands for overseas. The TE had a Standard engine. If in fact it is a TO30 the engine would still be Continental, slightly improved. I'm thinking that maybe the 7 is a 1. Is this possible? Good luck, have fun!!!

Pardon me for getting on my little soap box here. But I see a common misunderstanding.

The all TE20's had Continental Z120 engines in them. They were made in Coventry England and were produced using the Continental because the Standard Motor Company could not get their engine production going and H.F. had to import the Contenental.

Once the Standard Motor company got it's act together and started to supply motors the tractor designation was changed to TEA.

And tractors with other engines and configurations became the TEB, TEC, TED...etc.

Sorry for making such a big deal, it is just as a TE20 owned you have to be careful to get the correct Continental Z120 parts, manuals, and owners books.

Since the serial starts out "TO..." I assume it must be a TO tractor not a TE, thus your assumptions are probably correct. However, there is one other possibility I can think of. Maybe someone put a TO-30 steering box and dash on a TO-20, and didn't swap the serial plate. If left outside, sometimes the steering boxes will get water in them and if it freezes it will crack the steering box, and new boxes are not available, so someone might have done that.

might be a 1948 te-20. 1948 models had ser. #'s 20800 thru 77699. i think that they had z-120 engines on them.

Steve,Ya we had a TE-20 with the Z 120 Continental engine in it. Good little tractor. Dont know why Dad traded it off. Dont know seial # or for sure the year.

The may be a picture of it in the latest Ferguson Furrows newsletter.
