I was looking for some input on hauling my tractor on a 12' utility trailer. It is a single axle rated at 3500 lbs with the fold down tail gate. I will be hauling it back and forth to some land I own 15 miles away. My questions are: what would be the actual payload of a trailer of this size? Would the fold down, mesh type gate support the TO-30's weight? What is the best way to secure the tractor, chains or heavy tie down straps? Any advice will be appreciated. Dano

Phil and Ray, you both brought up some very good points I originaly bought this trailer to haul my Gravely ZTR mower which it was more than adequate for. I will be in the market for something in the 16' range with dual axles. Thanks for the input. Dano

You need a double axle trailer with brakes on at least one axle and a brake control box in the vehicle. I don't know if the mesh loading ramp will hold the tractor, but I sorta doubt it. Anyway, to me it's moot, as I wouldn't use a trailer that light for the job. You can usually find a decent double axle trailer used for around $1,000 or new for about $1,500. Fourteen feet is about minimum if you ever want to carry an implement, and sixteen feet is better.

I agree with Phil. The 3,500 lb axle rating is for the weight of the trailer plus it's load. What you have is a landscape trailer, they have the steel mesh fold down ramp. It will not support the weight of a TO30 (2,843lbs dry), add to that the weight of fluid filled tires, gas, oil, coolant, and whatever else you have on the tractor. Supposing you did manage to load the tractor without destroying the ramp, the empty trailer cannot weigh more that 1,758lbs (minus above extras) to be legal. Use chains to fasten the tractor to the trailer, you'll find an article here describing the chaining procedure listed under "articles".

Yeah, and to build on Ray's comments, don't forget one of the primary reasons to use a double axle trailer is they track better, especially when braking. The single axle will tend to jackknife, especially since it doesn't have any brakes. I know you aren't going far, but it only takes one hill, or one logging truck on your side of the bridge, or whatever, to ruin your whole day if you can't stop when you need to. Stopping is the whole deal. Getting going is no problem.
