Just completed rebuilding my 1953 TO35. Attached a disk to it to make sure everything in the hydraulics were working and I noticed a distinct knocking noise when the pump is in a strain. The pump was completely rebuilt. I'm using 90 weight oil in it and a local man told me the oil was to heavy. The temperature around here is currently 40 to 75 degrees. Please give me some input on this. I don’t believe the noise is coming from the engine.

Try replacing the relief valve on the side of the pump. They tend to get wear in them and then catch ands snap. Creating the knocking noise. Sound similar to a broken tooth in the transmission. I found out after tear down from a local tractor repair tech. $12.00 repaired the noise.

What you need to do is have a look at the top stop postion of your position control lever. If you set it slightly lower, the knocking should stop and the lift shouldn't lower. Also, you should use 90wt minerial oil. I like the MF M1103. I had the same problem with knock on my MF50 and what I told you solved the problem. FYI, you can also post your TO35 questions at the Massey Harris & Massey Ferguson discussion forum too. You have a great tractor!

The knocking noise is because the masseys hydraulic pump is a piston pump. When the the piston pin is worn the hydraulic pump starts to have noise. It also have noice if you raise the lift-arms to high or on the newer models like my own MF 575 set the lever on "constant pumping"

It is a nasty noise, but it is nothing to worry about. To save the tractor and it's hydraulic, do not overload the 3pt-hitch and drive carefully. Nice tractor you have.

I once asked that same question to a Ford machanic at a dealership and he said they all do it. His only suggestion was to loosen up the pump and move it one way or the other (I forget which way). Like you might be able to minimize it a little...I don't think theres that much clearance in the mounting holes...and I never tried it cause it don't appear (to them) to be a big deal. 90 wt. GL-1 oil is correct according to the knowledge of the board and the tech manuals...down to about 15 or 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Below that temperature it gets a little thick and the hydraulics get somewhat slow...but they generally still work at those temps...just keep the water out. Fred OH

what kind of 90 wt. oil ? mineral oil or gear oil? they do make some knocking under heavey load if it's at the top of there lift capassity you should do a pressure check on it to see what you have might be the releaf valve is set to high.

The oil is 90 wt gear oil. I don't know how to check the pressure releaf valve.

WELL YOU GOT THE WRONG OIL IN IT 90wt. gear is to thick . 90wt. gear is NOT a hyd.oil it's a GEAR oil.90wt. minnerl oil is thiner and still has the spec. of 90wt. USE M1103 from MF or GL-1 from walmart just make sure it's minnerl oil
