I had my distributor rebuilt and added a Pertronix Ignitor system to my '54 TO-30. My old distributor was so bad that with the points closed I could push the shaft over and the points would open to 0.030" The hole in the dust cover where the shaft protrudes was "reamed out" by about 0.080". I guess you have to expect that on a 50 year old machine. The rebuild required a new bushing plus a new shaft plus the advance mechanism was curved to the factory specs all done for a $100. Since a new distributor costs about $235, I sprung for Pertonix Ignitor System. I replaced the coil also. What a difference! It starts on about a quarter turn of the crankshaft! It idles smoothly, accelerates to max rpm quickly and smoothly. No more points to adjust or replace either. When I adjusted the carb I could run with a leaner main jet indicating that my previous spark was so weak and erratic that I had to enrich the mixture just to get it to run. It feels like a new machine. When I timed it the timing indicator was rock steady in the timing light as opposed to being all over the place before the rebuild. If you're having problems starting and running and you just completed a tune up, take a look at your distributor and check it for wear. It could be the cause.
