Just when I thought I had it beaten.....The TED20 1951 tractor pull superbly under load (i.e going uphill). As soon as the load goes off the engine surges and its like riding a fairground ride. I have timed the engine, changed the points, distributor cap, coil, condenser, plugs, leads, refurbished the carburettor and replaced the fuel lines. The engine compression is good (checked that yesterday) The engine idles well and revs okay but as soon a I drive it under low load it surges again. Help!!!!

Any thoughts gratefully accepted

Phil

Phil, I had very similar problems with my TED here in Australia and I corrected 90% of the problem when I located that the incorrect breather bolt had been installed on the rocker cover. The simple way to check if this is at fault is to get the tractor running and idling and remove the breather pipe from the inlet manifold just above the carby then place you finger over the hole so that the tractor no longer draws air in at this point if that solves the problem you may have the incorrect breather bolt as well. They are supposed to only have a fine hole with a little jiggler wire in them to keep them clear. Some people use hydraulic fitting bolts as replacements but this incorrect and stuffs the mixture. A foot note is that I beleive with modern fuels and low compression TED's with preheat manifolds etc they will never run perfect. Stephen

Phil, My Ferguson TE-20 TO-29 TO-30 shop manual says that"... if the engine surges, it will be necessary to loosen the bumper screw and screw it in until the surging is eliminated. this adjustment should be made running at 1000 rpm." The bumper screw is that little screw on the left side of the timing cover. I think they mean to say loosen the nut on the bumper screw and screw the bumper screw in. Hope this helps mate!

Phil.....sounds to me like you have a governor problem...probably just sticky....I don't have a 20 manual so I could not tell you how to check/adjust/service it....

I'm guessing the carb adjustments are at least similar to a TEA, if not the same. (Zenith 24T2?)If so:
The manual states that surging can be caused by the tractor running too rich. As I have been using what I think is a large amount of fuel as well as having surging I thought this must be it. I got rid of most of the surging by screwing the low speed air jet screw out. It is counter-intuitive - out is lean, as it is an air passageway.
Failing that then the screw on the timing cover is supposed to be turned clockwise (after loosening the nut) until the surging just stops. I haven't tried this but they say it is a very sensitive adjustment.
Good luck, let us know how it goes,
Jim

I had a similar problem when I bought my TED20 - changed the timing chain (old one was very stretched) and the weight advance springs in the disrubutor. Ran beautifully, until I got caught out by a severe frost and not enough anti-freeze which gave me a bigger problem!
