I use my TO20 frequently for bush hogging. I have a problem with the height of the bush hog dropping as I work. I've adjusted the quandrant for the hydraulics as directed but the problem persists. Is there a way to keep the height consistent? A hydraulics mod maybe? It would be nice if the attachments would stay put when you depress the clutch. Any thoughts?

Companies that sell "Bush Hogs" or rotary cutters
offer a limiter chain kit or you can make one. The
Ferg 20 will not like most other older (and some
newer) tractors that did not offer position control. Buy a kit or take 5/l6 approx log chain
and go from lower links to upper support on each side to limit how low it can drop. Factory kits are slick and you can adjust chain length with
slotted hooks. Any cutter brand kit will work.

For thoes of you who didn't know if Zane still sold his "Thang" you haven't been over to the N board lately. There have been MAJOR discussions about his and a make at home position control.

There were two early last month Feb 10 was one. Last fall an "N" club news letter was published that showed a simple make at home position control. The article apparently had a dig on the quality of the Thang and people went ape over it, name calling got out of hand etc. etc.

Anyway, Some insite did come out.

1st pictures of the position control were posted. (Look in Galleries under "parts & pieces" then search on 2N or position)

2nd here is a good explination of position control. It is not as "MYSTERIOUS" as some would lead you to believe.

I was thinking of having some of these parts made up. If there is interest in a batch job it could be cheaper for all.

I bought a Fergy Positioner from Steve in Austrailia. It works perfectly on my to-20. It blends in with the tractor, If you were not familiar with these tractors, you would not even know it was on there. Here is a website with photos. Link

The other guys have mentioned two options, Zane Thang or chains. For something heavy like a bush hog I would go with the chains as it takes the weight off the hydraulics. With the Zane Thang you will still be stressing your hydraulic system which by the sounds of it is as worn out as everyone else's.
When Ferguson offered a trailer (which had rear wheels only), the hydraulics were used to lift the front end of it and then it latched into place so that the pin on top of the of the differential took the weight, rather than the hydraulics. I think other of his implements had a similar arrangement.
If you go with chains you could also incorporate a turnbuckle for fine tuning the height.

I got a Zane Thang 4-5 years ago because I couldn't keep my scraper height set were I wanted it. I kept digging up my driveway gravel instead of pushing snow. The "Thang" fixed that problem, it's the best thing since sliced bread, it took maybe 1 beer to install. I don't hear guys talk about the "Thang" much anymore, I wasn't sure if Zane still sold them or not, but I did a quick search and this websight came up. It looks like the right place to get a Thang>Link

Might>Link be another option too. Get a set of sway chains. They go from the tractor center link out to each arm on the hitch. They hold the hog nice and steady. You set the chain length (real easy), and just drop the hog down and let the chains hold the height steady. They also make sure you get the same height every time if you lift your hog up to miss an obstacle and lower is back down again.

look up Zane Sherman on this site he has a device that will work for you and it takes 20 minutes to install ,i have one on a to30 and its great

I have just one thought. A Zane Thang, everyone on this site swears by it. It keeps your implement at what ever height you set. Others in here may have Zane's web-site to order one from. They claim its very easy to install and operate. Good Luck

I just used the stay chains on my TO-30 and an over running clutch. Made a nice rig for bushhoggin.
