I just purchased a 1953 ferguson to 30. I love the tractor and am just starting to really get into it. When I purchased it the throttle was diconnected and jeery rigged up with an aluminum piece of channel to control the throttle. When I looked into it deeper it appears that the front arm that the springs are attached to on the rod can not be tightened down and had been welded to the rod in the past but the weld had broken. I have temporarily tightened the arm to the rod but now when I move the throttle under the steering wheel I think it is reversed., when I pull it down towards your knees it slows down instead of revving up. Does the linkage under the dash that attaches to the disc at the end of the rod attach to the top of the disc or the bottom? If anyone has a picture or two of this it would help alot. Also there is a spring on the arm at the end of the throttle rod by the radiator that is just hanging there, does anyone know where this attaches to? When I try to throttle up it just kind of revs alittle then slows down again. This is my first adventure into tractor restoring and any info would help greatly.

Brian,

The best thing you could do to help the situation right now would be to get a parts manual and a shop manual for your tractor. You can get them from this site (see left) or from Jen Sales (they have a web site). Make sure the shop manual is one produced by MF. Once you have these manuals, you will be in a position to know that parts to replace and how to adjust the mechanism.

There are many sources for good used parts that you can contact to obtain needed ones. If you will send me your mailing address to my e-mail address ([email protected]) I will eend you a comprehensive list of sources for used and new parts for your tractor.

Having a vintage tractor is good but it is much better when you have the "tools" to help you get them running well. You have a great tractor and you will find wonderful assistance from the many Ferguson owners who participate on this site.

The throttle and governor linkage is too complicated and the adjustment is too touchy for a total explanation here. As Paul said, visit a MF dealership and buy the shop manual and owners manual for your tractor. The owners manual contains the details for adjusting the throttle and governor, it's part of the owner maintained items. The shop manual covers everything about the tractor from the radiator to the PTO shaft. You will find many usefull tips on Big Dean's website, he is a retired Ferguson mechanic.
