TO 20 hoist?

I've been thinking about building a hoist arm (crane arm) to use on my 3 point system on my TO 20. Has anyone done that? I am concerned about whether the 3 point hydraulics are set up to lift any significant weight. I certainly don't want to damage my lift arms or blow the hydraulics, but I need a way to load heavy items into the back of my pickup. I have little use for a front end loader, so I was hoping to invent something to use on the back. Any thoughts?

Great suggestions and input. Thanks to all. I've got 58 brand new ten foot sticks of NX drill steel. Maybe I'll take a stick and see what I can make. Pretty tough to bend. Gonna sell the rest cheap.

Mine is made from an old scraper blade with 4 peices of angle welded on and an eye at the end to attach a chain. one big atvantage to this, is that I have the luxury of the adjustment pins so that I can work off to the side, if need be. Good luck, have fun !

Thanks everyone for the input and info. I guess I need to look around because it might be easier and as cheap to just buy one. Haven't seen one in a catalog though. I hadn't thought about the + or - effects of the draft control, but from what you're telling me, it appears a hoist will work OK with it. Thanks again everyone.

If you purchase a Zane Thang, you will be able to hold your boom position at any desired height. It works real well for this application.

A buddy of mind has the real thing .One of the cranes that Ferguson made.VERY VERY RARE!!I think he got it in the southern states.He brought it to our tractor rally that we hold every year here.Needless to say it turned a few heads that day.It was pretty neat.The arm would slide in or out,and had a bunch of numbers along it to tell you how much you could pick up compared to how much the arm was extended. This is your history lesson for today!You can buy a hoist pretty cheap or build one'just watch the front end when your lifting.Good luck!

Hi Barry. We have our tractor rally every June in the Perth Ontario area. My good friend Wayne started up this annual road run, after reading about similar runs in the UK. It is a bunch of guys getting together with their antique tractors for some fun. We usually go on a road run for an hour or two through the country side. Last year we had about 15 tractors show up. A mix of every kind but mostly Ferguson. Last year we decided to go right through the town of Perth, population 6000. Needless to say we turned a few heads. We also have made a video of the road run. We come back to Wayne's farm for a BBQ and lots of tractor talk. It's a great day!

Kingcutter booms go for about $60.00. As mentioned below, the further out and heavier the load the greater risk in the front end raising. Need to watch this. I believe the hydraulic lift capacity for an N is about 750#. At the end of a boom, it could flip your tractor.

You can make one, they are common. I use a boom off an old post hole digger. It works good, but the store bought hoists are a bit longer than a post hole digger so you probably get a little better leverage. If you overload the 3 point hitch, it just won't go up. Doesn't really hurt anything that I have seen. But you will pop the front end up in the air if your not careful.

You can buy one of thes almost anywhere. I have one and have lifted lots of things into my truck.Just have to watch the front end dosen"t come up. Think I paid $89.00

There was an original Ferguson crane, they are very rare. You won't 'blow' the hydraulics, just the relief valve which is no bad thing as this lubricates the top end of the gearbox! You could however blow the lift cover gasket if it's in poor condition.

You may well need some front end weight, several times I have picked up things on Fergies and had no steering because the wheels are off the ground.

I don't know how useful this would be on a 20, as they have only draft control so you are either lifting or lowering with no position control. What about canibalising an old fork lift, putting some wheels on the bottom of the mast and connecting the ram to the hydraulics somehow?

The hydraulics will lift more then what the front end will hold down. There is a way to plumb the 3pth so you have either position control or draft control. If you have good hydraulics and the right touch you can lower the boom slowly with the draft control lever.

Or if you have hydraulics that are just "OK", the load will lower slowly on its own. I used this to advantage when lining up a tractor transmission to bolt it to its a motor - as the tranny lowered ever so slowly, I was able to slide it into place and insert several bolts at just the right moment, making it a one-man job. Another use for your boom, when you get it.
