I was going to have my TO30 Delco starter rebuilt. The system has been changed to 12 volts. Do I need to have the starter rebuilt as 12 volts, or does it matter. Any thoughts on rebuilding a starter are welcome. Any idea on appropriate cost for a rebuild?

Paul

As James pointed out, when you use your six volt starter with 12 volts, you halve the current. Since the heat generated is proportion to current squared times the resistance, you generate one fourth less heat in your starter by running it at twelve volts. If your starter is working fine, save your money and don't rebuild your starter.

I have a TO-30 with 12v system. It costed me $50 to have the 6v starter rebuilt by a local shop. The starter will draw more current, spin faster with more torque. Thus the engine will fire up quicker than before. The starter should last just as long as in a 6v system. Have fun...

What James says! I suspect a rebuild would be $100 or so. Not worth it. It's unlikely, but if you do burn it up, then worry about a rebuild.

Paul,

My TED 20 - 85 (same as your TO30) was also 6V, but I changed mine over to 12V as the batteries are about 1/4 the price of new 6V ones.

I left my starter as it was (6V) as do most people over here, as we don't seem to get any trouble with them running on double the voltage.

My theory is that with 12V instead of 6V, that if you follow the I = V/R route, and that the starter resistance remains constant, then it will only 'see' half the current it used to - which should not give you any problems.

To prevent overheating the starter though, do not sit there cranking the old girl over if it is really obvious she ain't gonna start.

As to cost over there, I can't help you . . .

HTH

Man, battery prices must be really low in the UK. Here in the U.S.A. Rural King store brand 6V tractor batteries sell for $29.95. That would price 12V batteries at $14.98.

1/4 of $29.95 would only be $7.49 -- that would be a good deal for a battery--I will take a dozen

Converted my TO-30 to 12 volt. Installed an alternator,12 volt coil and electronic ignition. Used the original 6volt starter with no problems.
