Gents,

I'm having a prob with my '84 MF-235...

I backed out of the barn today with no probs and drove into the field in second (low), but when I pressed the clutch in and the tractor stopped, and put the stick into the neutral position I was unable to select any other gears.

When I released the clutch thinking I was in neutral, the tractor lurched forward.

I can put the high/low range into neutral and its fine to idle, but I can't get the tractor out of 2nd, even tho the shifter is floating well in the neutral position.

Any suggestions of what I'm looking at or how to split the top half to examine the shifting/rods/etc??

I'm pretty much dead broke after recently buying this farm and at this time can't afford a service call.

I am quite mechanically inclined and any advice you have to offer wld be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Greg Stark

Transmission Lock-up: Remove Fill Plug using a 1 1/16" wrench. Push clutch in. With a long flat screwdriver and flashlight, find the middle gear rail (2nd & 3rd Gear).
Put screwdriver into gear stick slot and slide the planetary shift fork back toward the Reverse & Low Gear Slot where the stick shift is locked.
Matching the two slots together makes a large slot between the two planetary forks (neutral), and frees up the shifting lever to shift into any gear.
Replace Fill Plug and remember don't speed shift.

Greg, I don't know if this is the same for a 235, but it is worth looking at. I got this tip from Big Dean Austin's web site ->Link
Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse. Pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them
