Father-inlaw having trouble with his to-30. The tractor is very original and believe it probably needs some new wiring. He can not get it started- no spark. has original coil, new plugs, new points, rotor&cap. I will replace the plug wires and coil. Will then start replacing harrness until I find problem. any other ideas? Thanks

A simple test light doesn't care what voltage it is. If you know how to use a test light, Jims answer is right. If not, you can replace parts forever, or find someone to troubleshoot it for you.

Plug wires might keep it from running well, but shouldn't keep it from starting. Coil might be problem, but often they go bad when hot, not so often when cold. As you note, a wire(s) could be bad, or a connection, but look also at the key switch, which goes bad more often than you might think. Another item that will cause this problem is the condensor. You said you replaced points and rotor, but I didn't see you mention the condensor, which of course is inexpensive and therefore a good thing to try early in your search.

I just rewired mine and it is a pretty easy job. I have done a few tractors and I just take off one wire at a time and replace it with new wire and good connectors. It doesn't take long. You can use those split plastic tubes to hold a bundle of wires together or just tape them together. This will eliminate wiring concerns and look much better.

Check for 12 volts at coil; if you don't have it work backwards from there. Connections are more a likely problem area than the harness itself. I had the same symptoms and found a poor connection at the ammeter, for example. Clean them all up and chances are good you'll be up and running again.

He said orignal so would be 6 V system so how would he be able to get 12 V at coil?

It would be tough alright. Better wording would be "battery voltage at the coil".
(I did not realize TO30s still had 6 volts; figured 12, since the TEA switched over in '51.)

Mine would start ok but not run smooth. Finally decided to replace ignition switch. Run good after that.
