I have a TO-20 that won't start after has been running under working loads twenty or thirty minutes.Tractor will not turn over untile it cools off. I suspect a problem with starter. Tractor starts right up after cool down period.Tractor runs fine untile it is shut down or stalls. It seems like the starter armature sets pu when it gets hot

I assume it is 6 volts positive ground. The next time it does it, you can test the starter easily as follows: Bring 12 volt vehicle close and hook up jumper cables to the 12 volt battery. Put one of the other ends on the tractor starter post. Make sure the tractor is out of gear! Then touch the other end to a ground on the tractor. You will get a little spark but that's ok. Do not touch the tractor battery in any way. The starter should spin fast. If the key is on, the tractor should start, but your concern is only with the starter, as I understood you, so you might just leave the key off. If starter turns over this way, then it likely isn't a problem with the starter. This will not harm your tractor ignition or your 12 volt vehicle if you do it as I stated. Polarity, i.e., which cable goes to starter post and which to ground on tractor, isn't important as starter doesn't care about polarity, but if you want to be a purist you can make sure the negative goes to the starter and positive to ground just to have peace of mind, and frankly that's what I do. Please make sure tractor is out of gear. If the starter is good, chances are the post about bad connections is right on target. Check especially the ground cable where it connects to the tractor.

Before you go off and start spendin' money. Clean up and check all your electrical connections. A dirty or loose connection will increase resistance and heat up increasing the resistance even more. Thus when it is hot and you shut down. You can't get it to turn until it cools.

I had this problem last summer and I put in new "0" guage battery cables and hit the wires and terminals with emory cloth. Work like a dream now.

When checking your connections look where the ground is connected. If it is connected to the dash, there are a number of bolt connections along the way back to the block, that could be loose or corroded. I attached my ground cable directly to the block.
