I have a 1951 TO-20 with a Z-120 motor. Are there any 12 volt conversion kits aviliable. I have seen the ones on this site but none apply to a TO-20 tractor.

You can go to Napa Get a Delco 10-SI #7127 alternator for around $37.00 plus $11.00 core charge. If you can find an old junk one of some kind, save the core charge. While you are at Napa pick up a ballast resistor 1.8 (ohm) Napa #ICR13. You need that to use with your 6-volt coil. You will also need at least a 1 amp/50 volt diode from Radio Shack. Some 10 and 14 gage wire from local hardware store and you are set to go. The alternator bracket you will have to make your self. Click on Wiring below for an electrical print and a picture of an alternator bracket. Have fun.

Concerning your diode..... I have a 1952 tea 20 that been converted to 12 volt. It has the ballast resistor but no diode. Just what is the function of the diode..... ..... Thanks Bill

John; Your wiring diagrams are a great help, I just bought a TO30 with 12v conversion, but the wiring is a mess. Your left upper diagram is close to my tractor but I don't understand how you are getting power feeds to the system? Shouldn't the power feed to the ammeter come from the battery side of the shifter starter switch? The way I read you diagram the only time the system will have power is in the crank mode.

Yes it should come from + side, I drew it wrong. Sorry and thanks for pointing that out to me.

On my TE 20, when I converted it to 12 Volts.
I just exchanged the 6 volt coil with a 12 volt universal coil. This did away with the need for a diode. Do not forget to change the bulbs from 6 to 12 volt.
A company called Quick Start (link below) has a lot of brackets, Pulleys and other goodies for converting alternators.

You can also convert a regular 12 to a one wire.

The blue wire connects to either the ON on the starter switch. Or to an Oil pressure gage with a built in pressure switch. If the starter switch route is choosen the Alt will be excited as long as the key is on. If the Pressure switch route is choosen (reccomended) It will excite only when the oil pressure from the engine closes the switch.

If you are going the external ballast resistor route, you can get a hotter spark during starting by supplying 12 volts directly to the coil i.e. bypassing the resistor.
This can be accomplished by running a wire from the starter terminal to the +ve side of the coil (assuming -ve ground) - the non-points side. Then only when the starter is energized, the resistor will be bypassed.

Excellent response. Where did you get the small diameter pulley for the wide belt? JiminGA

I bought a 2 1/2" one at a local alternator rebuilding shop. They had to order it in from some source of theirs in Toronto. It needed a special nut to go with it, that reaches down into the centre hole of the pulley as the shaft of the alternator isn't quite long enough to have the threads protrude.
I think both parts cost me $28 Cdn ~ $20 US.
(This is really on my Triumph engine but the concepts apply.)

Thanks Jim. I will check with a local rebuilder. Probably cheaper than having one machined. JiminGA

I work maintenance in a machine shop and made it in the tool room. I am sure any job shop could make one.

There are no vendors with a kit for a to-20. Contact Genesee Products at 1-918 274-8000. They have everything but the mounting bracket. This is the same kit I used for my to-20. You will have to make your own bracket. Be sure to order the wide pulley for the alternator. My whole set-up cost $130. I bought a new alternator at Autozone for $50.

I just converted my 1951 TO-20 over to 12V.. bought a 12V coil with built-in six volt resister ($35.00)
And had my Six volt generator converted to 12V,
($55.00) Same expense for a 12V One wire alternator, therefor you dont need to mess around making mounting brackets for alternator...
