I have a 1951 TED 20 which hunts at most speeds except idle. When driving it "kangaroos" along instead of running smoothly. I have refurbished the carburettor, re-routed the fuel line away from the exhaust, have good fuel flow, changed the coil and condenser set the plug gaps and the timing. It ran okay before the above work with the exception of frequently stopping. Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this.

Hi Phil ... have just acquired my first tractor ('48 TEA20) and have fuel probs that can give similar results. I have rust scale floating around in the tank and it blocks the normal and reserve inlets to the fuel bowl. I'm getting faster at draining, cleaning and refilling the tank and will get it to the radiator shop for an acid bath/steam clean to fix it permanently.

"Hunts" means to me that it is not getting enough fuel. You say it has good fuel flow, so next thing I would think of would be a problem with the needle and seat or perhaps an adjustment of idle or fast running mixture. You said you adjusted timing, but that too could be suspect if not correct. If electrical, I'm thinking it would be more of a 'miss' rather than a 'hunt' situation, so that's why I suspect fuel.

Not totally familliar with your machine, but I suspect it has LUCAS dist. Check the play in the distributor shaft. This will cause the spark to advance, and retard, thus causing a "hunt". Good luck...let us know.
