I have a 1952 TO-30 that I've owned for about 6 months. When I bought it, it was tuned up by the seller (a reputable local guy). The tractor ran extremely well until recently. I put a new manifold and gasket on it a few weeks ago, and rebuilt and cleaned up the carburetor last weekend, but I am still having the same problem. The tractor starts pretty well, but once it gets warmed up and is under load it starts to choke, sputter, and miss. It gets worse as I am going up hill or under load. I have tried adjusting the carburetor (both idle and main jet), and I can get it to idle pretty smoothly, but when I throttle up there's a brief sputtering before it reaches RPM. This gets really bad when I'm under load. The weather here has been pretty cold (by California standards), in the high 20s low 30s at night, but I can't imagine this is weather related. Any ideas??

Mike

YYour symptoms sound like yourmixture might be too lean. You replaced the manifold and the gasket. Have you checked it to make sure it's tight and you don't have an intake manifold leak? It'll cause your mixture to lean out and with the leaning out that occurs due to lower temperatures, it could be the cause of your problem. When you adjusted the power jet for mixture did you do that at high rpms? You should be able to accelerate the engine speed smoothly when the mixture is right. After you check the manifold, revisit your mixture adjustment and richen it up an eighthn of a turn and see what happens. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you have just enough gas getting through to run it at idle or light load. Could be that some dirt has caused a restriction in the gas line, or in the carb.
Or, possibly the timing is out? Jim W

I agree with the others, pretty much. If it performs well when cold, I'd probably blame fuel. If the condition is constant cold or hot, I'd go to secondary ignition. ie coil wire, coil, dist. advance and so fourth. Good luck, have fun!!!
