bought my first 1949 te20 smoked a bit thought it was seals turned out alot worse. found blocke cracked in 6 spots. machine shop said it was a z 129 head and wouldnt work on the z120 engine, but it was running . help please

I believe that the Z-129 head has a deeper depression in the valve area than the Z-120. I have heard of another fellow who said that he swapped them. I would think that the compression would be quite a bit lower but it might run. I have both heads out in the garage. Email me if you want me to look at the visual differences.

Seems like the TE-20 in the tractor shed has a z129 head on it. Can't be sure.

Kevin, As stated below, the Z129 head will not work on the -20 tractors. The cracks you found in the block were probably in the narrow spot between the cylinders. That is very commonin these Continental blocks.These can be repaired by furnace brazing and then align boring the block. I bought a remanufactured short block for my TO-30 and that is how it was repaired.

Kevin, here is what the MF shop manual says about the heads:

"The TO-30 head cannot be used on the TO-20 or TE-20."

Perhaps the person that installed it modified in some way to make it work.
