Poofing noise coming from TO 30 exhaust.

I have a 52 To 30 I recently purchased and have been very pleased with it so far. But, it seems to have a slight miss indicated by the poofing sound. It starts very easily and runs smooth which tells me it probably does not need a full tuneup. I am planning to pull the plugs and do a compression test and start with the basics. Has any one else encountered this problem? Also, can anyone tell me whatis the range of compression on a healthy engine? How does the TO 30 stack up compared to the 8n and the Jubile? Thanks Dano

My MF35 has done that. I was able to eliminate most of it by adjusting the idle air control screw at idle, and then the high speed jet at running speed.

i also have a 1952 to 30 thats been puffing for years ,however it starts right up ploughs snow come rain or shine gives me less trouble than all the Bmw cars and Mercedes i got ,so i talk to it nice ,we work together in tough conditions and at nite i say Bye for now and i dont even glance at the cars ,I am in no way telling you your business but if you dont go looking for trouble with these babies you will be better off and they will repay you with years of service . Dano, Your problem can be anything from a bad spark plug to an exhaust valve that needs adjusting. Do a dry compression check followed by a wet check(wet check means you squirt some clean motor oil in the the spark plug holes to coat the cylinder walls). The reults of that will tell you the condition of the rings and valves and the head gasket. A healthy engine should be above 90 psi with no more variation than 10 psi between cylinders. The TO-30 (mine's a 1954) is comparable to an 8N and about 5 hp less than a Jubilee. The 8N has both draft and position control on the three point hitch whereas the Ferguson has only draft control. The position control feature can be added to the Ferguson via tha "Zane Thang" or the "Fergie Positioner".The Jubilee has some nice features that the 8N and TO-30 don't have. Hope this helps.

Dano...the engine will run on 50+ psi of compression but thats considered weak and will lead to an unbalanced or rough or slight shake condition ...anything above 80 ought to be ok thats what I use as a base line. Do both dry and wet checks.It could be anything causing your skip weak plug or wire is number 1 cause..I always convert to eletronic ing. now ,with a hotter spark they produce you have way less problems. I use pertronix they make them for every configuration you can come up with, I highly recommend it. As far as stacking up against 8n's etc. theres nothing like a fergie...

Dano,I think it is the nature of the thing to poof. We had a 1952 TO-30 up untill I sold out in 2002 and it always had the poof. Dad bought it new and I inherited it.

I went out to the shed yesterday and cleaned and regapped the plugs. The gap was to small on all the plugs and I reset them to 25. The engine cranked right over despite having not been started in a week with the temperature in single digits.The poofing noise was greatly reduced. Thank you all for your input. Dano
