i'm having problems with sorting the hydralics on a tractor i've been asked to look at. the operating handle for the hydralics has been seized for years and the previous owner had no need to use it so never got it sorted. i've removed the whole operating mechanism and applied wd-40 and brute force but still have'nt managed to free it and have resigned myself to the fact that i will have to buy a secondhand unit. this is only the start of the problem's as i decided to refit the unit but disconnect the linkage and operate the lever by hand - nothing, the arms are permantly down. upon checking the hydralic oil level it opears to be contaminated with water and well above the max. level. will replacing the oil with new and to the correct level make the arm's operate? any idea what grade of oil to use? the PTO is engaged so that can't be the problem

Put the whole lift head and mechanism in a bucket of diesel for a week...

Matt, you could check the bottom of the control forks inside the bottom of the back end where the linkage from the position lever is supposed to connect to the control valve on the back of the pump - sometimes they come disconnected.

Obvious comment, but do this with everything switched off and the brakes on, your fingers will thank you!!
