TO-30 - No voltage to system

I just tried to start my 6v positive ground T0-30 and it cranked over slowly and then drained to almost nothing. I was in a hurry of course and did a dumb thing that I had done a couple of times before over the years... I pulled my 12V car up to it and used jumper cables to try and start the tractor. I only touch the cables for brief periods of time. I put + to + and - to - and when I hit the tractor starter this time, a 'pop' came from somewhere and then nothing would happen after that. I charged the battery and the system still does not show signs of life. I read 6.8 volts on charged battery with voltmeter so I used cables to go go from charged battery directly to starter to see if starter turns over the crank and it does. Turning the Ignition/Light switch does not budge the ampmeter and turning it to the light position does not turn on the lights.
What have I done? I first suspect the starter switch. I then think of voltage regulator and then last the Ignition/Light switch. I don't want to just start buying parts without a good idea first.
Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Using a VOM, measure the voltage across the two terminals of the ammeter with the light switch on.
If 0v, go for the diagram, if 6.28v, your ammeter is blown, and therefore you have no connection to the system.

Look at is your voltage regulator. I can e-mail you a print if you like.

Do you have a manual for your tractor? If so, check the circuit diagram. I don't have mine handy so I can't be of any more help. You won't hurt the starter by doing what you did. Do you have the gear shift starter or do you have a modified system? In my system the key closes the ignition circuit and the starter circuit is closed by the starter switch. I can turn mine over with the key off;it just won't start. Could be your starter switch is damaged. If you have voltmeter, check and see if there is voltage across the starter switch when you engage the starter. If there isn't that's your problem. If you have a VOM, select "ohms" and with the starter switch engaged you should have close to zero resistance. If you have very high restance, then there is something wrong with the switch. Hope this helps.

You might check the archives on using the 12volt jump to the 6v tractor, the short answer is to go to the starter terminals and bypass the other circuitry, but read the archive instruction.
