Water Temp gauge on 53 TO30 stll works butis hard to read. Bought a universal type replacement but can't install it. The bulb on the end is too long to fit where the old one was installed. Do I need to buy a different gauge or can I just cut the end of the bulb off to make it fit? The old one was attached to the fitting on the block for the top radiator hose.

I just bought a water temp gage for my 53' TO30. The package has a note: "The sensor line is under pressure and filled with ether". Mine came with 2 brass fittings that are screwed together to shorten the length inside the block. I won't be able to install it tell this weekend but if you'd like to know how it goes leave me a note here.

Looks like I'm going shopping. Will try the dealer(40 miles away)or try to rig some kind of extension with pipe fittings.

Don't cut the bulb, the fluid will leak out. Try your MF dealer and see if he can get you the right one. You might try to see if you can put in a pipe bushing that will extend out and allow the longer bulb to fit. Hope this helps.
