Massey Harris Ferguson or just Ferguson?

I just purchased a TO-35. The front grill says "Ferguson" but the serial # plate says Massey-Harris-Ferguson. It has all the gauges you said would be on a Deluxe Model. How do I know if it has a two stage clutch? It has a Continental Engine...is this enough power to operate a 3 point-hitch 6 foot finish mower? Also, how do I know the year of manufacture...it's serial # is TO-35 162519? Any info appreciated.

I grew up using a Massey-Ferguson 35 Diesel Deluxe with a Servis 7 foot brush hog (drag type, it was too heavy to use the 3 point type). It has the Perkins 3 cylinder diesel engine which should have about the same horsepower as the Continental.
It has plenty of power for the job unless you get into heavy grass. When the mower starts to choke the engine down, you can use the two stage clutch to stop the tractor rolling without stopping the mower turning.
We're still using that oldtimer on the place 41 years after my dad brought it home new.

At one time there were two companies: Ferguson & Massey Harris. They met and got married. At first they went by the name of Massey Harris Ferguson, which was quite a mouthfull. Over time they shortened the name to Massey Ferguson. Your tractor came along shortly after the wedding, probably 1955, when they were still a mouthfull.
If you do have a Deluxe, that two stage clutch gives you live power, which is quite a big thing to me because I've used tractors without and there's no comparison.
Your 35 has power plenty for the 6 ft. mower.

I have not had a finish mower behind my 35, but I have run a bush hog quite a bit. My bush hog is 5 ft, but I'm sure it would run a 6 ft. finish mower if the grass wasn't terribly high. Since you have six forward gears, you have the luxury of stepping down to a lower gear if you need to, and that should allow plenty of power for a 6 ft. mower in any normal mowing situation.

Serial number link in column at left on this page will tell you the year. Looks like a 1955 model to me. Depress the clutch half way and you should feel a "notch" and tractor should stop movement (in gear). Depress all the way and PTO stops as well. That's two stage clutch. Handy for certain things like bush hogging a certain spot without tractor moving, etc. They bring a little more money. Not a real big deal in my opinion, however. The gages and tractometer are worth more than the two stage clutch in my opinion, but it can be useful.
