Thanks to all those who gave me advice when the tractor just didn't go any more. I have dismantled the rear end. The oil had emulsified and water was sitting in the bottom of the diff casing. Amazingly the diff itself looks perfect but the problem lay in the left hand side half shaft that had sheared just at the end of the spline. I have been unable to seperate the shaft from the axle housing and think I will just throw the lot in the trailer and take it to the local tractor dealer and get him to change it for me. They seem confident that they can acquire a new shaft for me.
