My to35 has an electrical system that could be described as freakish.It has a one wire alternator ,a voltage regulator,an external resistor on a 12 volt coil and wires that go nowwhere.I have a new delco 10si,a new 12 volt coil and a new battey.All the info I have found concerns a three-wire installation.Could anyone give me the details on how to properly wire this system?Also,my distributor is out of time and any suggestions on that problem would be welcome and appreciated.

Since everyone else has well taken care of the 1 wire, I'll try to address the distributor. Remove #1 plug. Place your thumb, or finger over the spark plug hole, and bump...bump, not spin the engine until compression begins to push on your finger. At this point place a rod, such as a long small screwdriver or welding rod in the hole. When the piston pushes the rod to the top of travel you have found #1 tdc. Place the distributor in the hole for which it's designed with the rotor facing where ever yoy want #1 wire. Set the firing order, which I believe is 1,3,4, 2 , put he cap on and start the tractor. You could wire it like in the diagram shown at the link below.
Doesn't your 10si have the two extra "unused" terminals at the side? If not you can follow the same diagram but just leave out/ignore the wire with the diode in it.
You could have one of two possible coil types. Some 12 volt coils are called 12 volt because they operate in a 12 volt system, but even so, still use a resistor. Some don't use the resistor though so you need to determine what you have, by measuring the resistance of the coil itself (or asking your supplier if it is meant to be used with a ballast resistor).
I can't remember the numbers though. I ~ think ~ that if it's the type that needs the external ballast resistor, the coil's input resistance will be about 1.3 ohms and if it doesn't need it, it will be about 3.3 ohms. Better wait till someone else jumps in with the numbers but if yours is way at the one outer end of this range then I think you will be able to figure it out.
(It would be nice for the next poor guy if you would get rid of that regulator.)

Hi JB,
This site has an excellent article on 12V conversion in the Research/Info=>Articles section at left on this page. When I converted my TE20, I included a solenoid and collected alt output, bat + cable on the solenoid input terminal. I couldn't locate the famous diode, so I installed a second switch between the alt and the solenoid to prevent the bat draining out through the alt. Good luck! Tex

Hi again,
I neglected to say I installed a single-wire alt; I led the alt line to the side of the solenoid where I also have the + battery cable attached. However, I installed a switch inline between the alt and the solenoid to prevent battery discharge. Hope this helps. Tex

Thank you Tex and Jim!My explaination was lacking as is my understanding of this problem.With your help,I can unfreak this system.Jim,I am going to get rid of that regulator.As to the next owner,that may be a while.After ALL THE $$$$$$$$, I WILL HAVE TO USE IT,NO WAY TO SELL FOR ENOUGH TO RECOVER.Yall have all the safe tractor fun you can stand!

Hello Gentlemen -

We've converted most of our diesels to the single wire delco's - all except the 65, because it sticks out too far.

There are two types of one-wire units - standard, and a low-speed cut-in. I don't know where the one you mentioned fits. I'd guess it's standard.

The wiring is dead-nuts simple - a 12 gauge run from the alt to the ammeter terminal away from the battery. If you have no ammeter, it can be run to the starter solenoid, or direct to the battery.

The standard unit has to be sped up to 1400 - 1500 engine rpm to cut in, the slow speed about 1000.

However, the slow speed unit does have some leakage current - 50 ma or so, and will run a battery down over three to four months. If this is a factor, the lead can be run to the "cold" side of the key (such as the ignition (not start) terminal) or an oil pressure switch installed on a diesel. We have not done this.

They are VERY dependable units.
