When I push in the clutch, the tractor still has power to the wheels. I shut off the engine, pushed it the clutch, but I cant get it out of first gear. The Clutch pedal has the same resistance, (I think)
Any ideas? Am I looking at an expensive fix?

Since you got deep into water, it's quite possible that your clutch plate has rusted to your flywheel. I've had a couple of vehicles that had that problem after sitting for long periods of time.

It may be possible to break the clutch plate loose by driving jerkily around with the clutch pedal depressed. This will put a back and forth strain on the clutch plate that MIGHT free it from the flywheel.

Worst case, you will have to split the tractor and remove the clutch. At that point you will probably want to get the flywheel resurfaced at a machine shop, and install a new clutch plate.

Good luck!

A couple thoughts:

Is the clutch pedal arm slipping on its shaft? If its loose or out of adjustment it may not disengage all the way.

If you have a PTO driven implement attached, try disengaging the PTO with the lever on the left side below the seat.

Thanks for your response.
I did have the PTO active when I realized what was happening. After I cut the engine, I dis-engaged the PTO, and still was unable to get the tractor out of first gear. I am hoping that you are right about the slippage of the clutch. There is a foot rest under the clutch. This may be keeping the clutch pedal from going down far enough to dis-engage, but this was not a problem last week.
Last week, I must admit, I got the tractor stuck pretty deep in a creek. The water level was high enough to enter the cotter pin drain on the clutch housing, and high enough to touch the clutch pad. It was in the creek for 2 days, before I was able to drag it out (check out stuck and troubled on the left) Coulld the clutch pad have swollen from the water, keeping the clutch engaged?
If I need to tighten the clutch to the pedal, can this be done from the exterior, or do I have to do this inside.

Paul,

According to the Ferguson Dealer Shop Manual there should be 3/16" clearance between the bottom of the foot peg and the top of the clutch arm where it passes under the foot peg. This is your free play adjustment.

If you have significantly more clearance than this, you'll need to loosen the clamp bolt where the clutch pedal arm is attached to the shaft and readjust it.

Its also possible that the clutch has some rust "gluing" it together. I don't think the lining will swell in water but I could be wrong. Over on the Ford 9n/2n/8n forum they describe this problem and suggest gettting it up against a sturdy tree and slipping the clutch to break it loose. You might a search over there for "stuck clutch"

Hope this helps
