I hope you guys don't mind. I have posted this question on 2 other forums with minimal response.
My wife bought a new Jeep Liberty. We are trying to decide whether or not to go with synthetic oil[ Mobil 1]and whether it actually would increase the life of the engine. We would appreciate hearing from mechanics who have actually 'been in there' and have observed whether it works or not. Thanks

hi paul im a mechanic in mi for saginaw county sheriff dept and city police besides our cars we also have h-d motorcycles . ive been to general motors trainig as well as harley factory training. ive been a master mechanic for 20+ years. there are to many advantages to synthetic to get into here .but there are also as many inaccurate myths about it.not only does it lubricate better at high temp but more importantly it flows great at cold temps.it has a better ability to hold contaminants in suspension until you change it.its less prone to cumbustion byproducts(ie acids sulphur)degrading it.people believe that you cant run in a new motor. this isnt the case corvettes and many high end cars are delivered using mobil 1.i personally have a chevy truck with 277k on it using sythetic. im sure ill come under fire from others here for my view on this. but see the amsoil or valvoline sites.the amsoil offers a better explanation though.easier to understand and will also explain any personal questions you may have.in short go for it

There are very little differences in lubricating properties between syn. and regular oils. The atvantage comes into play with a low oil or low coolant situation. The synthetics hold up far better under heat. Good luck, and have fun!!!

I'm going again the grain of your rules for posting, I hope you don't mind. I don't use synthetic oil but watched a friend go through the same scenario with a Ranger Ford. He used synthetic in it every oil change and traded it off at around 160 thousand miles...and as far as what I learned from his doing this was that he just preserved the engine for the next owner. I think that with the modern oils and changed at prescribed intervals...they should run 200k. At what mileage are you going to trade yours off? Just my observations. Fred OH

For what it's worth, I've used synthetic oil (Mobil 1, mostly) in a '97 F150 w/ 4.6L-auto and in a '95 Ply Van w/3.3L-auto since the 1st oil change. The F150 has 133K miles & the van has 107K miles - neither smoke nor use any appreciable oil between changes. Oil & Filters (AC-Delco & Motorcraft only) are changed every 5K miles or so. Go for it!!

how many miles are on it? you shlou wait until it has at least 10000 miles on it first. i was told the reason for that was to make sure everything is broke in and seated good. when you do switch you will be able to extend your oil changes. for the first couple changes the oil will look dirty still until you get all of the cheaper oil out it wloud be like flushing the system. once you star using mobil one more often it will look cleaner at changes.
